Cyprus: The Goldengreen leaf

by George Hatjoullis

Pain and suffering seems to be the lot of the Greek and the Greek Cypriot, which probably explains why there are so many songs that lament this pain. The most famous about Cyprus has a line which seems most apt today (my translation of the Leonidas Malenis lyrics);

Land of lemon trees, and of olives

Land of embrace, and of joy

Land of the pine, of the fir

Of courage and of love

A Golden green leaf cast into the sea

Land of the parched meadow

Land of the bitter Maddona

Land of hot wind , of unjust misery

Of wild weather, and of the volcano

A Golden green leaf cast into the sea

Land of laughing girls

Land of intoxicated youths

Land of myrrh, and of welcome

Cyprus of love and of dreams

A Golden green leaf cast into the sea

If you are a Greek Cypriot and this does bring tears to your eyes then you may be dead.  I offer two renditions of this beautiful song.
